Read your CV against the advert, line by line

Upload your CV and choose a live contract or temp job, or paste any advert: contract, temp or permanent, in any sector. Fitread computes a match rate from the skills the advert names, then checks the role title, the pay (the day rate and IR35 for a contract), how a recruiter search will find your CV, and the details recruiters look at first.

What a reading checks

  • Match rate

A score from 0 to 100: 70 points for the advert's skills your CV shows, 15 for the advert's title, 15 for the sector, which every reading gets because your CV is counted as being in the advert's sector.

  • Skills

Every skill the advert names, whether your CV shows it, and how often adverts for the same role ask for it, with the number of adverts and the month. On the free plan the names of the skills that would raise your match rate most are in Pro.

  • Role title

Whether your CV carries the advert's title or the role's usual name, so a recruiter search on the title finds you.

  • Pay

For a contract, the advert's day rate beside the median advertised rate for the role, shown only when at least 20 adverts give a day rate. For a temp or permanent advert, the pay exactly as the advert states it; we do not yet hold enough permanent adverts to compare a salary with the market.

  • IR35

For a contract: what the advert states, outside, inside, or not stated. Never inferred. Temp and permanent adverts get no IR35 section.

  • Searchability

Layout, headings, contact details in the body, file type and length: the things that decide whether a CV database reads your CV correctly.

  • Recruiter checks

Measurable results, buzzwords, repeated phrases and weak openers.

What it never does

The lines we do not cross

  • The match rate is computed by our code. The AI review is written around it and cannot change it.
  • IR35 is what the advert says. We never guess it from the rate or the wording.
  • Signed out, your CV file is read and discarded in the same request. Only the reading is kept, for 24 hours, at a private link.
  • We never apply for you. Applying is your own click on the job page.

How it works

Where a UK CV goes

Different systems do different jobs

Agency CRMs

Recruiters keep candidate records, notes and a searchable CV history alongside their client work.

Multiposters

An agency can distribute an advert to several job boards and route replies back to its recruitment system.

Employer ATS

An employer can collect an application, ask its own questions and track progress through its hiring stages.

CV databases

Recruiters can search stored CV text and fields. Clear headings and accurate role and skill words help them read what you actually did.

These are roles, not a claim about which product any employer uses. See the documented systems and their sources, last checked 26 September 2026.

Questions people ask

How is the match rate worked out?

Our code compares the skills the advert names with the skills your CV shows. 70 points for the advert's skills your CV shows, 15 for the advert's title, and 15 for the sector, which every reading gets because your CV is counted as being in the advert's sector. The AI review is written around that number and cannot change it.

Is Fitread only for IT contractors?

No. It reads any CV against any UK advert: contract, temp or permanent, in any sector. It started with contracts because that is where ContractorUK's adverts are.

Is my CV stored?

Not if you are signed out: the file is read in memory and discarded, and only the reading (skills found, figures and advice) is kept for 24 hours at a private link. Signed in, your CV is stored only if you tick "Save this CV", and you can delete readings and CVs at any time.

Who else sees my CV?

To write the AI review and the opener, the text of your CV and the advert is sent to Anthropic, which runs the Claude AI model for us. Nobody else. How we handle your CV.

Does Fitread apply for jobs for me?

No. Applying is your own act. A reading links to the job page on ContractorUK, and you apply from there when you are ready.

Do I have to pay to see or apply for jobs?

No. Jobs, applying and job alerts are free and stay free. Pro pays for tools: more readings, every fix, the Editor, openers, LinkedIn and interview practice.

What does the day-rate figure mean?

It is the median advertised day rate for the role on ContractorUK in the current month. We show it only when at least 20 adverts give a day rate, and we print the number of adverts and the month beside it. It is what adverts offer, not what contractors are paid. A temp or permanent advert shows its pay exactly as stated instead; we do not yet hold enough permanent adverts to compare a salary with the market.

How many free readings do I get?

5 a month, whether or not you have an account. Each reading shows the first fix in each section in full, up to 5, and counts the rest; the names of the skills that would raise your match rate most are in Pro. Pro shows every fix and skill.

Which files can I upload?

PDF, Word (.docx) or plain text, up to 5 MB. You can also paste the text of your CV.
